In case you needed proof that time never slows down, here we are February!
If you are receiving this email, you’ve survived the polar vortex that was Wednesday and Thursday this week. Congratulations and aren’t you glad that’s over!
Over here at Active PT, we’ve been taking an online course that has pushed every team member way outside of their comfort zone.
When was the last time you stepped outside of your comfort zone? A study published last July found that our comfort zone is the shut off switch for our brain (read here for the full story).
It makes sense! When you’ve done something a thousand times, your brain no longer needs to learn. Ultimately, staying within your comfort zone means there’s not much room for growth.
According to Russian psychologist, Leo Vygotsky, there is an ideal zone of learning and growth called the Zone of Proximal Development. This is the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can achieve with guidance and encouragement from a skilled partner. Be it a teacher, coach, boss, or therapist: they are able to be that extra “boost” for you to succeed! (Interested in reading more? Click here.)
Five Ways to Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone:
1. Start a conversation with strangers: In our increasingly technological world, we forget to look up and talk to the people around us. It’s so more comfortable to scroll through your phone than to talk to the person right next to you! Who knows what you could learn or make connections with the people around you.
2. Join a new group, gym, exercise, etc: A new group/gym means something you haven’t done before–maybe you’ll be great, but maybe you won’t and therein lies the risk. Bonus points if it’s a new physical location where you might meet new people!
3. Find an accountability buddy: If you’ve made a goal to do something new outside of your comfort zone, enlist your partner/parent/child/friend to be your new accountability buddy! They have one job, and one job only: keep you from shrinking back into familiarity and keep taking steps towards your goal!
4. Seek a leader: Seek out someone (that teacher/coach/boss/therapist) who is knowledgeable and learn from them! You are still going outside of your comfort zone AND you get the help of someone who knows what to do. You can’t lose.
5. Remind yourself it’s worth it: Growth in the right direction for the right goal is absolutely, 100% worth it. It might make you scared, but the results will be worth it. Remind yourself, write it down and look at it often!
We hope you’re joining with us as we push outside our comfort zones! If you need help, we are here for you for encouragement and guidance. Hit reply and let us know what you’re working towards and if you need our help!
